It suddenly struck me that 100 years ago the guy in the hole would have been “bloke from Ireland” and the rest “english imperialists and their lackeys”, or somesuch. Plus ça change…

Right.. In fact the flow of people out of Ireland didn’t stop until the mid 1990’s. There are still over 50,000 illegal Irish citizens in America alone, not counting the many legal residents. Ireland is not used to being a place where people come here to work, but it seems to have accepted the change fairly well – maybe because we see ourselves in the faces of the people coming here.
